How is Word Error Rate Calculated?

Word Error Rate (WER) is basically no of errors divided by total no of words.

These errors can be no of substitutions, no of insertions and no of deletions. We will sum them up and divide it by total no of words.
Formula, WER = (substitutions + insertions + deletions) / total words

What can WER be used for?

WER can be used to check the accuracy of a transcript generated by Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). You can compare Truth transcript with ASR generated transcript, to see how accurate is your ASR engine.

What is WER?

With the help of WER we calculate the performace of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). WER gives us the precentage of not accurate words. You can calculate the accuracy by 100 - WER %.
